College Secretary Full Time

This is an exciting opportunity for a collaborative individual with a strategic and versatile outlook on sophisticated matters of governance, compliance and risk involving multiple partners or stakeholders. As our new College Secretary you will co-ordinate strategic advice and guidance for the President, Provost and other senior leaders on legal matters, regulatory compliance, crisis management and risk mitigation to help underpin our world class research and teaching.

To be successful in this role you need to be able to build trusted relationships with the President, Provost, Vice-Presidents, other senior management team members and the Chair of Council.


Duties and responsibilities


The College Secretary has two primary roles with a range of responsibilities:



  • Function as one of the College’s principal officers, with overall management responsibility for corporate governance, regulatory compliance, research integrity and legal compliance.

  • Coordinate the work of the Council and Court and their associated Committees.


Essential requirements





    A deep understanding of the HE sector, in the UK and internationally, alongside the political, economic, and cultural factors which are influencing its evolution. Extensive experience of dealing with legal and regulatory compliance issues.
  • Experience of providing informal ‘horizon scanning’ and strategic advice to the senior staff of a major organisation, in terms of identification and highlighting of major themes, opportunities, risks and challenges.
  • An appreciation of the culture and needs of an academic institution dedicated to excellence in research, learning experience for its students and service to society. Excellent and effective communication skills supported by the ability to develop and maintain strong networks across the sector and with key policy groups.
  • Experience of leading a diverse set of functions and delivering high quality services, and evidence of developing collaboration and coordination across functions.

  • Experience of operating at Board level and administering governance processes and structures within a large and highly visible organisation, including experience of having supported the development of governance best practice and the building of highly effective Boards and committees.

  • Advanced knowledge of the principles, theory, and practice in the fields of corporate governance, regulatory compliance, research integrity governance, and risk
