If you are looking for a consultant psychiatrist role in Manchester working with intellectually disabled adults, we would love to hear from you. You will be joining Penninecare LD team which was recently shortlisted for “RCPsych Intellectual disability Team of Year” award and “Nursing times” award.

This is a community job based in the Oldham Integrated LD team , and you will work with a well-resourced multi-disciplinary team. You will have a dedicated office, fulltime secretarial support and IT access as well as facilities for remote working. There is exciting opportunity to undertake research and academic work with MMU university.

The post holder will provide psychiatric input to adults with learning disabilities of 18 years and older living within the Oldham area. The post holder will be a key member of the learning disability team.

The post holder is expected to carry out assessments of complex cases and support development of multi-disciplinary management plans. There may, very occasionally, be the need to take on supervisor role for restricted patients.

You are not responsible for any inpatient beds but there may be need to liaise with and provide advice to generic services for your admitted patients.

You will work closely with the Local Authority and other partner agencies and contribute to the management of the team.

The post holder will provide psychiatric input to adults with learning disabilities of 18 years and older within the Oldham area.

The post holder will be a key member of the team based at Civic Centre in Oldham and will have access to clinical space at the Cherrywood clinic. It is also expected that psychiatric assessment, advice and liaison will be given in a variety of community locations. For example: The post holder is expected to carry out assessments of complex cases and support development of multi-disciplinary management plans.

With regards to inpatient cover, there are inpatient consultants who cover inpatient mental health wards and if learning disability clients are admitted due to acute mental health detoriation then the RC responsibilities will be taken over by inpatient consultant. However if the client is known to team then postholder will need to provide regular consultation and work jointly with inpatient RC.

The postholder will share will have provide cross cover for other LD consultants the responsibility for managing adult patients with learning disability within community

The consultant will be expected to work in close liaison with the wider community health teams, social services teams, provider services, and other statutory and voluntary agencies. The post holder is expected to:


  • Provide clinical leadership to the team.

  • Provide consultation and input in Care plan and treatment formulation, guidance on evidence-based treatment and effectiveness.

  • Ensure liaison and collaborative working with other services/agencies.

  • Ensure appropriate implementation of duties under the Mental Health Act.

  • Ensure multi-disciplinary, multi-agency and partnership working.

  • The department operates along a clinical directorate structure, with great emphasis on ‘clinical governance’ and involving key senior clinicians in management decisions.
