Job summary

The Prime Minister’s Office enables the Prime Minster to deliver the Government’s overall priorities and to communicate the Government’s policies to Parliament, the public and international audiences. From the Press Office, Switchboard and Custodians, to the Events & Visits team and the world class Private Office support; the diverse Downing Street team draws on varied expertise from across the Civil Service and beyond. The teams come together to deliver excellent service to the Prime Minister while also making No10 a great place to work.

This is an exciting role working in the Number 10 Digital team, which represents the Prime Minister on high-profile digital channels and platforms to communicate the Prime Minister’s priorities, major policy announcements and other official events and visits.

Job description

The successful candidate will be a confident, audience-driven communicator who has experience working in a fast-paced news or comms environment. They will be comfortable managing a variety of major projects simultaneously, with excellent attention to detail. They will have the skills required to understand government policy at speed and translate this into informative digital communications that resonate with wide audiences.

The successful candidate will have excellent copywriting skills that are audience focused, with experience in the day-to-day management of social media channels at a major institution or government department. They will have a strong sense of what is newsworthy, which they can combine with their knowledge of digital platforms to think strategically, maximising the long-term impact of government comms.

They will be a proactive team player, able to balance multiple priority projects, leading a large range of stakeholders and partners to best deliver on the Prime Minister’s priorities.

They will be expected to take part in the Number 10 Digital out of hours rota, acting as the first point of contact for all digital communications out of hours, for which they will be paid.

They will work with digital teams across the Government Communication Service (GCS), the New Media Unit and external partners to clearly and effectively communicate the priorities of the Prime Minister.

Responsibilities of the role

  • Plan and deliver a daily programme of social media content based on PM activity, government missions, announcements, and digital-led moments.
  • Drive digital-first projects such as major PM-led moments; digital campaigns; or long-form written explainer content for gov.uk, with objective and insight driven content plans.
  • Build credible, trusting relationships with senior stakeholders and confidently pitch to them.
  • Strive for creativity, working in tandem with content counterparts to generate innovative ideas, working with teams across the house to help deliver them.
  • Build relationships with external partners to extend the reach of our messages and engage new audiences, working with creators, earned media, or other organisations.
  • Respond to reactive issues and draft responses to urgent news stories.
  • Maintain an up-to-date forward planner and content calendar.
  • Lead on posting to social media and gov.uk publishing, ensuring the highest editorial standards and accessibility requirements are met.
  • Informal line management of No10 digital secondees.
  • Join the Number 10 Digital out of hours rota, acting as the first point of contact for all digital communications out of hours, for which you will be paid.
  • Advise teams across No10 and government on best practice digital communications and help to co-ordinate x-government campaigns

A minimum 60% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace. Although requirements to attend other locations for official business will also count towards this level of attendance.

Selection process
Candidates successful at sift will be invited to interview. The interviews will be assessed against the Behaviours outlined in the job description along with Strengths. You will also be asked to complete a written exercise as part of the interview process assessed against the Experience element of the Success Profiles Framework.
