This is an exciting opportunity to join the Server Infrastructure Team responsible for supporting SWL Primary Care along with corporate stakeholders. This is the IT technical role within the infrastructure team focuses on the provision, performance and availability of on-premises and cloud data centres and server infrastructure. The role involves providing technical escalation and 3rd line support to internal ICT, ensuring that infrastructure is proactively maintained, and available to users in accordance with defined KPIs and SLAs. The postholder will participate in the out-of-hours On-Call rota for the ICB infrastructure and the customers it serves.

The Server Engineer is a lead specialist role that provides an escalation reference for the team, applying expert knowledge to assist in the resolution of problems and develop the knowledge of the team. The role provides specialist advice across a range of IT infrastructure areas including, but not limited to; Server Compute, Storage (SAN/NAS), Enterprise Hypervisors (ESXi, Hyper-V, AHV), Converged infrastructure, VDI (VMware, Citrix, MS RDS), Active Directory, DNS, File Systems, Print Services, Data Backup & Protection Systems including both installation and support. They are responsible for the strategic planning and project works within the team.

Note the postholder may be expected to participate in the out-of-hours on-call rota for the ICB infrastructure and the customers it provides a service to.

NHS South West London Integrated Care Board (ICB), as part of South West London Integrated Care System (ICS), is a partnership of organisations that come together to plan and deliver joined up health and care services to improve the lives of people in our six boroughs: Croydon, Merton, Kingston, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth.

Each ICS consists of two statutory elements:
an Integrated Care Board, bringing the NHS together with its partners locally to improve health and care services
an Integrated Care Partnership (ICP): the broad alliance of organisations and representatives concerned with improving the care, health and wellbeing of the population, jointly convened by the ICB and local authorities in the area.

ICBs are statutory NHS bodies responsible for planning and allocating resources to meet the four core purposes of integrated care systems (ICSs):

to improve outcomes in population health and healthcare;
tackle inequalities in outcomes, experience and access;
enhance productivity and value for money and;
help the NHS support broader social and economic development

  • Responsible for configuration, documentation and control of Server and Application equipment and software.
  • Responsible for the effective resolution of service incidents.
  • Manage and implement configuration, upgrades, patching of the Server and Application infrastructure.
  • Diagnose complex ICT problems in dynamically changing ICT situations.
  • Making technical decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • To maintain expert knowledge of the infrastructure hardware and systems in use.
  • Maintain audit information of the installed equipment, utilise remote control capabilities to diagnose and resolve problems.
  • To diagnose and resolve faults in a quick and effective manner, exploring a range of options where necessary to bring faults to resolution.
  • Troubleshoot Server and Application hardware and software to ensure the stability of the service and ensure that configuration issues are dealt with efficiently and professionally.
  • Coordinate with staff in other teams within the organisation, when required to work on complex problems.
  • To offer expert advice on the organisation’s infrastructure.
  • To provide specialist support in Server and Application Infrastructure Services.
  • To develop and perform routine maintenance activities to support the upkeep and availability of infrastructure services.
  • To perform administration tasks, including operational maintenance, taking a lead role for specific areas as required.
  • To work with relevant peers to ensure the security of the ICT systems and to identify any risks arising on-going.
  • Assist relevant peers in the planning and execution of system testing necessary for new and upgraded infrastructure installations prior to release in the live environment to ensure continuity of service.
  • Monitor systems performance, capacity, and connectivity to ensure problems and faults are dealt with promptly, and regularly report these findings,
  • To monitor Infrastructure performance, setting suitable exception thresholds to promote remedial action prior to the occurrence of major faults or unplanned outages.
  • Follow change management policies and procedures are always followed by internal and external staff and support companies.
  • Process and review planned changes to the estate through participation in the relevant forums.
  • Design and develop standard server configurations and build.
  • Apply release procedures to ensure that equipment is fully fit for service and ensure continuity of service provision.
  • Perform regular Disaster Recovery testing.
  • To ensure services are in accordance with legislation and good practice.
  • To provide management reports regarding the trends and performance as required.
  • To keep abreast of developments in new technology and its implementation in order to follow best practice.
  • Assist relevant peers in the planning and execution of system testing necessary for new and upgraded infrastructure installations prior to release in the live environment to ensure continuity of service.
  • Contribute to the planning, developing, reviewing, and updating/ upgrading the organisation’s IT infrastructure of partner organisations.
  • Assist in maintaining standardised and unified documentation of all infrastructure systems and services.
  • Ensuring that Infrastructure Documentation is reviewed and kept up to date.
  • Assist in developing the knowledge of the team of technical experts by coaching and provision of training in the subject area.
  • Display the ability to professionally work autonomously, with competing high priorities, managing multiple work streams.
  • Ensuring SLA & KPI compliance.
  • Maintain asset registers for all infrastructure hardware, systems, and 3rd party services.
