This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic Engineer from a Roads or Active Travel background to join our Newcastle office to play a role in the development of our regional civil engineering team and the design of some of the most exciting and prestigious civil engineering design projects in the United Kingdom and worldwide.

Working alongside a team of specialist engineers and technicians, as well as colleagues across a range of various engineering disciplines, you will ensure the delivery of technically excellent and profitable projects.

You will work across a diverse range of sectors including Highways & Active Travel, for all aspects of infrastructure design, on a varied portfolio of civil engineering projects.

You will have the opportunity over time to assume greater levels of responsibility and autonomy as your professional skills develop. With accredited professional development programmes, you will be supported towards Chartership if not already achieved.

The role will require you to use your knowledge and expertise to define and translate clients’ needs into designs for infrastructure, with sustainability at the forefront of the design.

Educated to degree level in Civil Engineering (MEng or BEng), you should have a minimum of 3 years demonstrable experience in a Civil Engineering role within a consultancy or local authority environment and be well versed in relevant civil design software such as Autodesk Civil 3D. Ideally, a working knowledge of QGIS and InfoDrainage would also be beneficial.

With knowledge of DMRB, Manual for Streets and other local authority specific standards, you will have experience of working in a multidisciplinary environment.

The candidate shall have experience in developing schemes ranging from Concept on to Detailed Design and Construction with an awareness of approval processes and section agreements:

• Provision of technical inputs across the highways specialism including geometrical design, detailed design to the Specification for Highway Works, earthworks analysis, active travel and drainage design.
• Work as part of the team to undertake a range of technical design and written deliverables.
• Show technical competence including the use of software such as Civils 3D, InfoDrainage, GIS and the Microsoft Office Suite of programmes.
• Knowledge of the NEC suite of contracts would be beneficial.
• Plan, lead and undertake site visits, as required. Experience of site inspections/supervision would be beneficial.
• Act as a mentor to junior members of the team.
• Actively working towards Chartership.

You should possess a desire for personal and professional development and have proven your ability to work effectively as part of a team. You should have an organised and methodical approach to managing tasks and priorities to meet deadlines and have a close appreciation of the commercial factors which affect design solutions.

Given the collaborative and on occasions client focused nature of this role, excellent communication skills and experience of using your initiative to overcome challenges are essential.
