Network support / Unix engineer - An interesting job
at Scotnet Other in Other (Published at 11-11-2024)
Scotnet is a specialist broadband provider. We build and operate several of our own networks across Scotland as well as providing mainstream services such as VDSL, FTTP and IP telephony.
For over 20 years we’ve been offering high-quality services across the UK to users ranging from home users to large companies and the public sector.
Scotnet has a small technical team. We are looking for a technical person to join the team.
The Scotnet Operations Centre – where the work is mainly based - is central Inverness and is in an underground former military command centre. Applicants must be able to work in such an environment.
Working with such a small team requires a large number of skills. Training and time to learn – both off the job and on the job – will be provided to a suitable applicant.
The job is mainly Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00, but may involve a small amount of antisocial working – for example during system upgrades and network restructures – time-in-lieu at an appropriate rate will be given in these cases. We envisage the roll to be based full time at our offices until the successful candidate has demonstrated that they can self-manage and competently complete tasks. Thereafter the roll is likely be around 2 days per week in our offices and the remainder working from home.
We are primarily a Cisco and Unix/Linux house. So applicants must be well versed in that technology. While certification in these areas is not essential, we will expect an applicant to demonstrate a skill base at interview. Note that we have absolutely no Microsoft software in the company.
The skills we are looking for are likely to include:
- Network design – from simple home and office networks with or without VLANs up to and including systems using VRRP and dynamic routing protocols such as BGP.
- Network diagnostics – as above.
- Ability to work on radio networks – Ubiquiti and such-like.
- Core system security monitoring and checks.
- Program development and maintenance. At present we use any sensible mixture of unix tools – C, html, go, perl, PHP, python, rust, shell and all the unix toolsets, soap, xml.
- Ability to climb “low” (three to six meter) masts and ladders (up to three meters) for core equipment installation, replacement and testing. Training and certification would be provided for this task.
While most of the work can be undertaken from our Inverness base, we will have the need for occasional visits to data-centres – London, Edinburgh, Glasgow etc. Some jobs may include West of Scotland Island work where being away from base for periods of 2-5 days could be requested.
Starting salary will be in the range: £35K-£45K
Start date: By agreement
Application deadline: 22/11/24; CV to jobs@scotnet.co.uk. References will be taken only for the successful applicant.
An initial “stage one” interview is likely to be held by telephone, with short-listed applicants expected to attend our Inverness offices. Both work and interview dress-code is informal.
