Environmental Manager

Cranleigh STEM is partnering with a leading environmental and waste management company in the South of England to recruit an experienced Environmental Manager. This role will play a key part in their compliance, energy, and sustainability team. This is a permanent, full-time position based in either Gloucestershire or Oxfordshire, with regular travel to client sites across the South.
The Role
The purpose of this role is to ensure that environmental monitoring, control, and management systems at landfills and other facilities operate efficiently. The goal is to meet regulatory compliance while achieving high standards of energy efficiency. Additionally, the role involves investigating and implementing technologies to minimise environmental impact and support the business in reaching its Net-Zero objectives.
Salary: £42,000 - £44,000
Benefits: Company car, bonus, pension scheme, life insurance, 30 days’ holiday (inclusive of 8 bank holidays), which will increase with service, with the option to buy up to 5 extra days.
Role: Full-time, permanent.
Location: Gloucestershire | Oxfordshire
Hours: 9am-5pm, Mon-Fri - 35 hours per week
Responsibilities:
- Oversee the efficient running and maintenance of environmental control systems to ensure compliance.
- Understand environmental management and monitoring infrastructure for continuous performance assessment.
- Manage gas utilisation plants to maximise gas capture and minimise emissions.
- Regularly review gas infrastructure at landfills to identify improvement opportunities.
- Monitor and optimise leachate management systems to ensure long-term compliance.
- Investigate compliance issues, identify causes, and develop solutions.
- Communicate with regulatory bodies like the Environment Agency.
- Assist with environmental permit applications and variations.
- Support landfill technicians with ad-hoc tasks or monitoring.
- Identify and propose new technologies that reduce environmental impact.
- Collaborate with other teams to explore power generation and carbon reduction technologies, preparing business cases where necessary.
- Take on project management roles during site works, including landfill engineering.
- Ensure compliance with management systems such as ISO45001, ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO50001, and the Competence Management System.
- Manage contractors, including inductions, supervision, and monitoring.
- Ensure adherence to company policies, including health and safety regulations.
- Undertake additional duties as required by management.
Requirements:
- Experience in environmental monitoring and control at landfills.
- Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks in waste management.
- Experience in project and contractor management.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and databases.
- Strong problem-solving skills and health and safety awareness.
- Desire to learn, develop, and contribute to continuous improvement.
- Team player with initiative to work independently.
- Full driving license.
