Base Pay: $74,443.20 Annual . Summary: The Datacenter Specialist is responsible for the administration of a virtual environment of servers, as well as standalone servers, inclusive of storage configurations, accessed by departments throughout Nueces County and used within the Information Technology department for managing network services. Responsibilities include the installation of servers, storage technology, Active Directory administration, disaster recovery and back-up services, Exchange email setup and security, and resolving problems. Incumbent must have knowledge and experience with managing virtual machines, access control, backup strategies, and be familiar with supporting network resources configurations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. The incumbent reports directly to the Chief Information Officer. Administrates the Information Technology Department’s Datacenter by:
  • Planning with IT and department personnel on specific resources needs.
  • Setting up servers and related storage within a VMware virtual environment.
  • Managing fileservers, application servers, and specialized servers providing networked services.
  • Performing scheduled updates, maintenance, and repairs to servers and applications.
  • Managing user accounts, email accounts, and secure access control within Active Directory.
  • Creating and maintaining network group policies within Active Directory.
  • Planning and implementing domain migration processes within Active Directory.
  • Ensuring that backup and recovery of data and software is performed as required or scheduled.
  • Planning and implementing disaster recovery processes.
  • Overseeing the utilization of network resources to ensure maximum availability and efficiency.
  • Notifies users of planned network and application downtime and any conditions affecting availability.
  • Monitoring the status of problems, maintaining problem logs, and overseeing problem resolution.
  • Maintaining knowledge of current technologies, best practices, and improved methodologies.
  • Maintaining knowledge of current cybersecurity practices within realm of responsibility.
  • As needed, responding to project and help desk tasks of any information technology nature.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Required qualifications are: 1) a Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Computer Science or Management Information Systems, plus at least two year of experience in datacenter management; or 2) an Associate’s Degree in Computer Science from an accredited community/junior college, plus at least three years of experience in datacenter management; or 3) certification in a related field, plus at least three years of experience in datacenter management; or 4) at least five years of experience in datacenter management. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and Commissioners’ Court. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Class-C Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: This position requires reasonable knowledge of network hardware, computer systems, and software related to a wide range of information systems and technology, including personal computers and peripherals, dedicated network servers, workstations, data communications, and Internet services. Specifically, this position requires knowledge of local area network (LAN) technologies, Windows operating systems, Active Directory-Azure Systems (AD), Domain Name Services (DNS), Group Policy (GP), VMware and Storage technologies, knowledge of MS Exchange, SQL Server, IP networks and subnets. This position requires the use of personal computers, hand tools, test equipment, and various software packages. Must possess excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills. Must have excellent interpersonal skills in working with County employees and system users. Must be able to deal effectively with management, including directors and department heads, in determining goals and objectives and in developing plans to implement advanced technology designed to solve a wide range of operational needs. Must be able to work independently, or as part of a team, to accomplish complex, detailed work. Must possess the following traits: promptness, punctuality, neatness, and integrity. Must be able to listen effectively and carry out instructions.
