We are currently looking to recruit a HCSW/Plaster Technician into our Trauma and Orthopaedics Outpatients Department. This post holder will be required to cover both sites Russell’s Hall Hospital and Corbett hospital.

The Plaster Department within Outpatients is a service which includes cover for busy fracture and orthopaedic clinics usually Monday to Friday, however some weekends are required. Our plastering service also provides plaster cover to the wards within the trust. This enables comfort rounds, which allows us to assess and monitor those patients who are in a cast.

You will be required to work independently as well as part of a team, possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal and demonstrating an understanding of issues of confidentiality. As part of the HCSW role, when required you will be expected to work alongside the fracture and orthopaedic clinics and to utilise your HCSW skills.

Applicants must be enthusiastic, motivated and caring with a flexible approach to work. The successful candidate must be willing to develop their current skills by completing the British Casting Certificate within 2 years. Plaster technician experience is desirable but not essential. You should also be prepared to undertake in-house training as appropriate.

The Higher Clinical Support Worker will work together with the members of the nursing team to provide a high standard of care to patients. He/she will be competent to undertake and record designated observations and clinical procedures, teach aspects of patient education, support the registered nurse in outpatient clinics, input data into the IT system and ensure equipment is available and ready for use by the nursing team.

They will communicate with senior staff/any clinic administrative, organisational problems that impact upon the smooth running of clinics and/or the patient pathway through the Outpatient Service.

The post holder will be required to complete the British Orthopaedic Association Casting Course BCC to achieve generic and team specific (higher level) competencies within an agreed time scale, this should be within twelve months of post commencing.
