About us

Applications are invited to join a world leading research team as a Communications Manager & Administrator.

The post is to support the £6M EPSRC-funded Programme Grant TRANSNET (Transforming networks - building an intelligent optical infrastructure), a research programme to create an adaptive intelligent optical networks (a collaboration between UCL, Aston and Cambridge Universities). The post will also support the Extending the bandwidth of optical communications (EWOC) EPSRC grant and the research of the Optical Networks Group (ONG) at UCL.

About the role

You will have a combined responsibility for:

  • Communication and promotion of the scientific research results, achievements, and impact of the grants to media and key stakeholders
  • Day-to-day administration of the research grants, including the organisation of events, meetings and outreach activities.

The postholder will ensure the communications strategies and delivery are in harmony with the Departmental vision and UCL’s overall branding. You will work alongside the Departmental Communications & Marketing Manager and the wider Faculty of Engineering Sciences Communications teams.

Based at UCL, you will work to promote research achievements to the media and key policy bodies/Government departments including the production of the TRANSNET programme newsletter and press releases for different research achievements across the different research programmes. You will communicate with the external Advisory Board and industry partners and organise programme workshops and other related events with external stakeholders and experts. You will manage the TRANSNET, EWOC and the Optical Networks Group websites and digital & social media presence, both externally – to provide a communications platform with the rest of the world on the achievements of TRANSNET, EWOC and ONG, and internally – for dissemination across the programme.

The post is available until 31st May 2026 in the first instance. Further funding to support the post may be available. We will consider applications to work on a part-time, flexible and job share basis wherever possible.

About you

We are looking for an individual with enthusiasm for science & technology underpinning digital communications infrastructure, excellent science communication skills as well as initiative and outstanding administrative and organisational abilities, an eye for detail and initiative.

Applicants must be educated to university degree level or higher, in electronic engineering/computer/science/physical sciences or a related discipline.

Excellent science communications and literacy skills are necessary, including the ability to present science research and its impact effectively to a range of audiences, including to non-experts & media. The successful candidate will have the ability to write clearly and engagingly across formats, including news, web, and social media content.

Experience of working as an effective administrator and/or PA is essential as well as experience of events organisation.

Experience in a similar role within a university or industrial research programme is desirable.
