Position Title: Manufacturing Design Engineer

Location: Paneltex Ltd, Somerden Road, Hull, HU9 5PE

Hours of work: 40 hours per week - Not remote - Monday to Thursday 08:00 to 17:00 / Friday 08:00 to 14:00

Salary: £35,000 - £40,000

Other Benefits: Equivalent of 32 days annual leave (inclusive of bank holidays), Contributory pension scheme & Life Assurance cover.


Job Overview

The role of the Manufacturing Design Engineer is to work within the Manufacturing Engineering office to support the production facility with Engineering projects to include design work, support producing standardised manufacturing drawings/procedures, creating work Instructions and build techniques and support the production of Manufacturing Engineering bill of materials to also include designing Jigging & tooling methods and implement lean processes and support ongoing continuous improvement changes throughout the business for product design and build processes.

Paneltex designs and builds commercial vehicle bodywork and ancillary components for all sizes of vehicles.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with Manufacturing Engineering design projects in all departmental functions.
  • Support process design from initial concept through to project delivery of the product.
  • Provide technical skills to develop existing and new production methods and systems and develop methods of work within the manufacturing process.
  • Work with the design/production/purchasing team providing onsite support/advice to allow manufacture of the product to suit engineered design.
  • Ability to read and create technical drawings.
  • Provide production technical support to external and internal customers.
  • Maintains communication with departments to ensure production priorities and shortfalls are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Attend project and factory review meetings as required.
  • Amend/update and manage drawing control as a result of identified design changes and improvements within the production environment.
  • Review and identify standardisation and modularisation of Designs for Manufacture where possible.
  • Review Manufacturing drawings for clarity of content and understand how designs could and will be manufactured within the business controls.
  • Support R+D projects as required and provide clear feedback to all business stakeholders allowing for production ready designs and processes.
  • Coordination with the other Engineering disciplines and stakeholders allowing a centralised data share of project information and progress.
  • Identify proven and conceptual design methods and systems to support design for Manufacturing.
  • Review and support document production to support worklists, cutting lists, create approved fixing and bonding methods.
  • Support testing and technical documents of proven build systems and methods.
  • Contract build reports and lesson learnt files to be generated and managed.
  • The above list is not an exhaustive list of duties, the post holder will be expected to perform additional ad-hoc duties as and when required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Fluency in Autodesk Inventor 2021, Vault 2021 and AutoCad 2021 (Experience of iLogic would be beneficial, but not essential).
  • MS Office fluency (at least Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Good engineering knowledge of materials and their properties (particularly steel, timber and GRP composites).
  • An awareness of Whole Vehicle Type Approval regulations.
  • An understanding of Design for Manufacture.
  • Experience of working within a Lean Manufacturing environment.
  • Practical commercial vehicle bodybuilding (or van conversion) experience using panel construction could be beneficial.
  • A proven understanding of Engineering methods, processes and manufacturing procedures to include composite materials, Glass reinforced product, Aluminium and steel construction.
  • Ability to visualise solutions (and problems!)
  • The ability to work to deadlines.
  • A keen eye for detail.
  • Excellent communications skills both written and verbal and able to communicate effectively with other members of staff in all departments including the manufacturing teams.
  • Able to lead and deliver project meetings to all levels of the business.
  • A good knowledge of engineering manufacturing procedures with experience of implementing and using 5s and Kaizen methods.
  • Critical thinking with exceptional problem-solving skills, able to work independently or in a team environment.

Qualifications

  • Technical experience with preferred background in engineering qualifications (mechanically & electrical) and minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar position/industry.
