Entry Level Medical Engineer

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Medical Engineering Department at Alder Hey Childrens NHS FT for an Entry Level Medical Engineer.
This is a Permanent post within the Electronics Workshop, working closely with the Senior Engineers and other healthcare professionals to contribute to providing a safe and effective equipment management service.
As a member of a multi-disciplined team of technicians you will be required to work with minimum supervision. Duties will include the routine maintenance of medical equipment; including patient monitoring, IV Therapy, patient therapy, diagnostic, medical gas and pathology equipment and the fault rectification of said equipment, which at times will be 'patient connected'
An onsite Practical skills test is a Mandatory requirement of the Interview process. Please DO NOT apply if you cannot facilitate this requirement.
Possess a relevant Level 3 qualification in an Engineering related subject and equivalent experience in the maintenance of highly complex Medical Devices.
To commission, repair, maintain, overhaul and recalibrate a wide range of medical equipment including patient monitoring, IV Therapy, patient therapy, diagnostic, medical gas, pathology, radiology, pharmacy equipment used within the medical field.
To work regularly on equipment, which may be 'patient connected', in areas including Intensive care and HDU, theatres, and equipment in the home environment as well as being able to work across the whole range of specialities and disciplines. Some of this equipment may be connected via medical information networks and/or driven by computer based software systems.
To work on medical devices that will require precision engineering techniques, expertise and a high level of manual dexterity which requires skills such as soldering, crimping etc.
To complete all documentation, including safety tests, fault history and commissioning records. To input this information to the Trust medical equipment management system.
To attend training courses and to update one’s own technical knowledge of specialist equipment and to update one’s knowledge in respect of the specialised paediatric clinical use of such equipment.
To participate in an annual performance review and develop a Personal Development Review with the consultation of the line manager.
The Medical Engineering Department is situated on the 2nd floor of the main building in the C wing of Alder Hey's amazing Hospital in the Park, built in 2015.
The department comprises of a multi-disciplined team ranging from Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Administrative staff and Equipment Library staff.
You can expect to be supported heavily in this position by the way of specialist training and development to build your skills, knowledge and experience, with the potential for further opportunities within the department.

To communicate with medical device manufacturers and other external organisations technical information relating to medical devices and manufacturers.
To liaise with equipment manufacturers, external organisations and patients/carers regarding equipment to be returned for service and/or repair, and to organise documentation and courier where necessary.
To promote effective communication with stakeholders including professional staff, patients and carers.
To provide support and advice relating to the use and maintenance of medical devices and the services offered by Medical Engineering.
To provide help and advice to end users, parent and patients relating to the operational use of medical devices.

The post holder is required to manage their own daily workload as issued by their immediate team leader.
The post holder is required to prioritise their own workload appropriately. Types of decision made include prioritising current equipment pressures within the Trust, available time and cost effectiveness of the activities carried out.

The post holder will be required to implement Trust wide and department policies/procedures.
The posts holder will be required to assist in reviewing department policies/procedures.
Responsibility for financial and physical resources
The post holder will routinely be required to handle valuable specialist medical devices on a daily basis.
The post holder is required to perform stock control check and also ensure the stock is correctly managed and secured.
There is no budget holder responsibility with the post.
There is a requirement to carry out maintenance of medical devices.

To attend training courses and to update one’s own technical knowledge of specialist equipment and to update one’s knowledge in respect of the specialised clinical use of such equipment. To disseminate this information to the relevant healthcare specialists as required.

To possess a level 3 engineering apprenticeship and BTEC Level 3 or equivalent experience in a relevant engineering related discipline.

Input maintenance records carried into the Trust’s maintenance database.
Utilise IT based test equipment whilst maintaining medical devices and calibration.

Management and Leadership
The post holder will be required to work to department/Trust policies and procedures.
The post holder has a degree of autonomy on a daily basis although will have a local source of supervision.
The post holder will be required to manage their own workload.
The post holder will be required to suggest improvements to the local service when necessary.

Physical Effort Required for the Job
Manual handling of medical devices including incubators etc., daily lifting of delivery goods and transporting.
Lifting weights up to 15 kg, pushing and pulling weights up to 190 kg.
Short duration frequently on a daily basis.
The post holder will be required to work for long periods in the day in a restricted position whilst carrying out data inputting and, Help Desk activities.
The post holder will occasionally be required to utilise manual handling aides such as a hoist to lift device up to 400 kg.
Mental Effort Required for Concentration and Multi-Tasking
A high degree of concentration will be required for up to six hours per day
The ability to multitask is essential as higher priority repairs need to be dealt with at short notice
Emotional Effort Required for the Job
The post holder will have frequent contact with patients/parents of which some will be distressed and will often have severe clinical conditions.
The post holder will also be required to work in areas in the Trust such as Critical Care, Theatres, Pathology and will be exposed to the day to day activities within these areas of the Trust.
Working Conditions
There is a requirement to work on a daily basis with medical devices that are often contaminated and can contain bodily fluids.
There is a requirement to work with COSHH substances on a daily basis.
The post holder is required to perform maintenance activities on medical devices of which some will be live circuits protected by a RCD.
