Tax Assistant

Your team: The News UK Tax Team comprises 7 individuals across Peterborough and London managing the tax affairs for our worldwide business.

Your role: You will play a crucial role in supporting our Tax Team, gaining exposure to Corporation Tax, Employment Tax, and VAT compliance cycles. This unique opportunity to build a solid foundation in tax compliance and accounting skills in the media industry.

Day to day you will:

VAT:

  • Collate and analyse data sources for UK and Irish VAT compliance.

  • Prepare and file JV VAT returns for Octave and Newsprinters.

  • Prepare overseas VAT returns for multiple jurisdictions, collaborating with Deloitte as needed.

  • Clear VAT flags in Risk Centre and respond to business onboarding queries.

Employment Tax:

  • Collate PAYE Settlement Agreement (PSA) computations.

  • Manage monthly and quarterly PSA provisioning, including tax calculations and journal recharges.

  • Assist with monthly IR35/Self Employment tax audits and liaise with relevant teams.

  • Manage US entity onboarding of contributors/suppliers and ensure IRS forms are correct.

Corporation Tax:

  • Assist the Corporation Tax team during busy periods with data analysis and CT computation.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Support senior members of the tax team with ad-hoc tasks.

  • Assist the Tax Analyst in day-to-day administration.

  • Occasionally work in the London offices when required.

  • Participate in the wider tax team weekly meetings.

What we’re looking for from you:

  • Desire to study AAT/ATT

  • Basic understanding of Balance Sheet reconciliations

  • A desire to build up a solid base of tax compliance and accounting skills

  • Able to work on their own initiative with good interpersonal skills, as well as being able to take and understand instructions from management

  • A high level of IT literacy in Microsoft Office packages
