Engineering Manager Full Time

We are looking for experienced and ambitious Engineering Manager to join Arriva, based at our Hemel Hempstead Depot.

As an Engineering Manager your role will oversee the maintenance and presentation of the fleet across the depot in accordance with current legislation, prescribed policies, maintenance procedures and safety standards at bus garage(s) as defined by the Engineering Director, Area Director and UK Bus. Achievement of fleet and workshop Key Performance Indicators and targets as defined by Engineering Director, Area Director and UK Bus to provide the agreed transport services in the most efficient and reliable manner.

The role of a Engineering Manager will involve:

  • Qualified or working towards Transport Manager (Management CPC Holder).

  • Deliver engineering performance and service delivery.

  • Ownership of core engineering KPI’s for the site.

  • Stores activities and KPI responsibility (Supply Chain, Stock levels, VOR position, Warranties, Stores KPI’s).

  • Bus presentation and cleanliness..

  • Fleet maintenance, repair and service quality checks

  • Management of ATF’s (where applicable).

  • Fleet reliability and improvement action plans.

  • Deployment of campaigns and fleet compliance.

  • Produce Daily, Weekly & Period-End reports as required.

  • Other reasonable duties which are not mentioned above maybe required to be undertaken.

Health & Safety:

  • Ensuring the maintenance, health and safety, and environmental impact of Company premises meet and improve on the required Company standard.

  • Leadership (duty of care) of engineers onsite staff, including external contractors.

  • Site responsible person for H&S and ensuring that facilities and premises meet HS&E statutory requirements.

  • Garage H&S walk-rounds, MBWA’s, Annual Audits – BSI / ISO / UKBus etc.

  • Resource planning support to Team Leaders (leave, sickness, training).

  • Maintain O-Licence compliance on all engineering related matters.

  • Contractor management – H&S, Property, CapEx.

Customer

  • To ensure that the multi-site depot peak vehicle requirement is achieved on a daily basis and to ensure that all vehicles supplied for service are cleaned and maintained to a high standard that exceeds the statutory requirements set out by DVSA.

Quality

  • Breakdown/defect trend analysis and improvement action plans.

  • Delivery of core engineering KPI’s to EQSM and TfL standards.

  • Delivery of centrally owned technical training strategy.

  • Engineering Standards Audit delivery.

  • Ensuring all records are maintained for legal audit compliance.

  • Conducting all required audits to ensure legal, Company & TfL compliance, and taking appropriate action to rectify problems.

  • Preparation of technical reports when required.

Continuous Improvement and Innovation

  • Garage lean strategy / 5S.

  • Reducing waste and supporting Continuous Improvement and increased efficiency wherever possible.

Financial and Decision-making

  • Engineering lost mileage by route and overall garage.

  • Front line implementation of business-critical projects (Fit 4 Future) in garage.

  • Building garage budgets and measuring financial performance against targets for accurate life-cycle cost and EBIT analysis.

  • Contributing to Working Parties.

  • Involvement with Project Management.

Essential Postholder Requirements and Person Specification

  • A strong Engineering background with proven experience in maintenance, repair and overhaul of heavy vehicle, equipment and/or machinery, preferably with knowledge and/or experience of the Bus/HGV industry.

  • Ideal candidates will have served a recognised apprenticeship or hold a vocational qualification in a relevant mechanical, electrical engineering, or similar field. Alternatively educated to degree level or diploma in an engineering /vehicle maintenance discipline.

  • Good knowledge of Health & Safety and leads by example in the adherence to related working policies, practices and procedures.

  • Ability to lead and supervise a team and individuals to bring out the best of their abilities to ensure a safe and effective working environment is maintained.

  • Excellent attention to detail.

  • Good interpersonal skills and written communication, happy to communicate with all staff and accept feedback in all forms.

  • Excellent organisational skills.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience of working in partnership with Trade Union representative.
